KAUST desired to secure their seawater intake supply for the desalination plant by erecting a redundant seawater intake pipeline. The maximum pumping flow rate is 5,787 cu.m/hr through a 1.95km 1000mm diameter GRP pipeline. The pipeline was designed above-ground for the majority of the distance to avoid the poor soil conditions below that may cause the pipe to break due to high/low tides. The new pipeline interfaces with the existing system from inside the seawater intake pumping station and with the connection at the desalination plant pre-treatment. The tie-ins have been designed to consider easy and quick isolation/selection of the either pipeline. The redundant pipeline has been operating since October 2020.
